Syaoran nodded dutifully. "Hai. So Kurogane-san and I will come with you again tomorrow morning, Sonic-san?"

"I wanna come too!" cried Sakura at once.

"Now, now," said Fay gently, lowering himself back down onto the couch. "Let's wait until morning to argue about that. For now, let's have some fun!" He laughed happily and clapped his hands in the air. "We haven't gone sight-seeing at all in this country. Let's go out on the town for the afternoon!"

Sakura looked at him carefully and offered a small smile. Fay beamed back. All was forgiven. "I think that sounds nice," she agreed quietly.

"YES! Let's go!" Mokona added, hopping into the air delightedly. "Mokona is so bored running around the building while Sakura and Fay fight. Everyone should go out and have fun as a family!"

"Fighting...?" Syaoran muttered.

"I dunno," growled Kurogane. "What do you think, hedgehog?"

"All right!" Sonic jumped up. "Next stop, Mystic Ruins! There's a train that goes there, but since it's in Station Square, it's currently not in operation. Not to worry though, we still have replica Chaos Emeralds." He pulled out one of the fake emeralds. "Gather in close everyone, or you'll get left behind." Once they were all clustered, and Shadow had an emerald of his own, the two hedgehogs shouted in unison.

"CHAOS CONTROL!" The group disappeared in a flash of light. They found themselves near a forest, in a field with a few small hills.

"I remember this place," Kurogane said solemnly. "This is where the white pork bun dropped us!"

"Yep!" Mokona said happily, twirling around giddily on top of the annoyed Kurogane's head.

"This is a very beautiful area, Sonic-san," Fay said appreciatively, surveying the scenery with one hand on his hip. Sakura watched him curiously. She approached when the others were emerged in exploring and and leaned in close to his ear.

"Fay-san, I'm so sorry about earlier."

Fay smiled. "Oh, Sakura-chan, please don't worry about it. It's truly fine. I don't know what came over me." He put his other arm around Sakura in a fatherly way and stared out at the forest beyond.

"But, Fay-san..." Sakura blushed. "...do you love Kurogane-san?"

Fay laughed and avoided the question. "Oh, I don't know, Sakura-chan... but is there some other reason why you want to know? It can't just be that you want to play matchmaker."

"I..." Sakura's face flushed brighter. She curled her hands into fists and then released them. "...I think I'm in love, too."

"Is it Syaoran-kun?" Fay whispered gently.

Sakura, embarrassed, nodded.

Fay chuckled softly to himself. "Don't worry, Sakura-chan. I don't think getting him to love you in return will be a problem."

"Did I mention that hedgehogs have very sensitive hearing?" Sonic asked. "Well, never mind. Let's head to the actual ruins." He turned to Syaoran. "I'm sure you'll love it, but not as much as other things you've seen. If you know what I mean, and I'm sure you do. The ruins are this way." He pointed northeast, and the group set off.

Sakura's face, which had settled back into its normal pale state, turned fire-truck red at once. "W-what?!"

She was spared from discussing the topic further, however, as Kurogane and Syaoran trudged up the hill at that moment, Mokona whistling shrilly as Kurogane grimaced in annoyance. Sakura saw Syaoran's face light up at the mention of ruins and smiled for him. It made her so happy to see such excitement displayed in her friend... crush... what was he?!

"I'm looking forward to it, Sonic-san," Syaoran replied with wonder in his eyes.

Fay gave Sakura a little forward push in Syaoran's direction. "M-me too!" she stammered. "I wanna come with you, Syaoran-kun!"

Syaoran's head turned, a flicker of surprise crossing it. "You want to see the ruins, too?"

"Of course," Sakura said earnestly. "I want to be with you when you're around something that makes you so happy, Syaoran-kun!" Syaoran beamed. Sakura went on, "And also, I think I remember... the Kingdom of Clow had ruins! If I see these ones, it might remind me of more things!"

Suddenly Syaoran's body tensed, his expression full of unexplainable fear. He shook his head violently so that Sakura wouldn't see his pain, but she noticed it at once. What was it? Something she'd said? But what? "Princess, I don't think you should go near those ruins."

His voice was firm, cold. Sakura looked at him with concern. "Syaoran-kun, what's--?"

"In the ruins at Clow, there is a strange marking on the floor," Syaoran said viciously. "You touched that marking and lost your feathers."

Sakura gasped. "But..." That was probably the one memory she was missing, the one contained in her last feather. But something didn't match up. Why would she have been near Clow's ruins in the first place? Toya never would have allowed it. And she had never been particularly interested in Clow's history. She must have had a very good reason to be there. And anyway, how would Syaoran know what had happened to her? Didn't he meet her for the first time after her feathers were scattered?

Sakura's resolve hardened. She was going to these ruins if it was the last thing she ever did. She would get Syaoran alone and tell him the two most important things on her mind right now. Number one, she loved him. And number two, a question: Who are you?

Just then, a robotic hand grabbed Amy, and dragged her into the air. "HAHAHA Now I have the advantage Sonic."

"Eggman! I expected better of you. This is the most clichéd plan.. ever."

"But it works. I can get you to do anything, because if you don't..." His voice trailed off as a robot appeared and pointed his cannon directly at Amy's head. Sonic turned pale. "I hate you Eggman. You know that right?"

"HAHAHA. Come with me to the Egg Carrier willingly, or else."
Sonic glared at the rotund doctor, before leaping up onto the floating platform.

"Farewell, your leader is mine, you have no hope of defeating me. HAHAHAHAHA." The platform rose into the sky, taking the two hedgehogs with it.

The group stared after the platform in horror for a full minute after it had finished ascending into the sky. Finally, Kurogane shook his head and muttered to no one in particular, "What a clichéd plan."

"Kurogane-san!" cried Sakura in horror. "Sonic-san and Amy-san are gone! They could be killed! We have to do something!"

A malicious smile spread slowly across Kurogane's face, and a low snicker rose from his throat. The ninja's hand automatically shot to his sword. "I can handle it."

"Brute force won't help us now, Kuro-dyan," Fay said disapprovingly, holding up a finger as one would to a misbehaving toddler. "Eggman will kill Amy-san if we try anything, and that's the last thing we want."

"So you suggest doing nothing?" the ninja growled. Sakura clutched at the air for something to consol her. Syaoran automatically took her hand.

"No, I suggest we be patient and plan our attack strategically," Fay said smugly, placing his scolding finger on Kurogane's nose with a giggle.

Kurogane's scowl turned into an audible roar as he wrenched his sword out of its sheath and chased the laughing Fay across the hill. Fay wasn't strong, but he was swift. His lean body could move like it was made of paper, dodging every blow as if he had all the time in the world. Each time Kurogane advanced, instead of fear, Fay just showed more glee. Despite herself, Sakura smiled. Whether Fay would admit it or not, the two of them really did care about each other. She wondered if Syaoran...

The platform arrived on the Egg carrier and they entered a room with many jail cells. "Sonic, feel free to pick your living quarters."
Sonic approached the smallest cell.
"Ah-ah-ah. Except for that one." Sonic glared at the doctor and walked stiffly to the second smallest cell.

The robotic arm tossed Amy roughly into the smallest cell.

Eggman turned around.

A loud noise occurred.

Eggman found himself pinned against a wall, Sonic was hovering over him. Literally.
Sonic's usual blue coloration had been replaced by all black, his pupils had disappeared, and his quills were standing up. He was also floating.

"Give me one good reason not to kill you right now." His voice was full of a certain menace that Eggman had never expected.

"Because I don't want you to." Amy, who had been freed from her cell, had put a hand on Sonic's shoulder.
Sonic immediately reverted to his normal state.

"You're a very luck doctor." He said flatly. The two hedgehog walked over to the platform that carried them here, and took it back down to the ground.

Fay eventually stopped twirling long enough to pause and take a deep breath, and Kurogane was forced to sheath his sword and calm down as well. Mokona had hopped onto Sakura's head during the chase, which happened to be a mere few inches from Syaoran's as they held each other's hands. Fay laughed gleefully between gasps of air. Kurogane glared half-heartedly at him, as if it took energy to stay angry. It was as if that tension had never existed, as if the five could be happy together forever and need nothing more.

"Sonic-san and Amy-san are stronger than we give them credit for," Fay supplied once he had caught his breath and suppressed his laughter. "They're probably clever enough to escape on their own. We should wait here for them until they do, so they'll know where we are."

Syaoran grinned, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. Sakura knew that it was the ruins in his mind. "All right. Do you mean this exact spot... or this area in general?"

Fay shrugged, seemingly uncaring, but he winked at Sakura when Syaoran's gaze was turned away. "Well, Kuro-ha and I could stay here if you two wanted to explore..."

"All right," Syaoran repeated. He turned to Sakura with a tender smile. "Do you want to come with me?"

"But... but, Syaoran-kun..." Sakura gave him a tiny smile in response, not wanting to push her luck, but wanting to test him. Where did his heart lie? "...what about the ruins?"

Syaoran sighed. "I think I was overreacting. Just because Clow's ruins had that effect on you doesn't mean all ruins will. We've all been so... tense these past few days, it was getting to me."

Sakura nodded earnestly, her heart beating far too fast. "Hai!"

By the time the platform reached the ground, Sonic noticed that two members of the group were missing.
"Hey, where did those two kids go? I could have sworn they were here a minute ago."

"They went to the ruins. Are you guys okay?" Tails asked.

"We're fine," said Amy "but we need to go in about an hour so we can get back home before the laser charges again.

Fay grinned and ran to meet them, Kurogane reluctantly trailing behind him with Mokona. "I'm so glad you two are all right," Fay said with a smile. "Kuro-yip was so scared for you, but I assured him you'd be all right. Sakura-chan and Syaoran-kun went off to explore..." He would have finished his sentence, but then again it could have ended in two very different ways.

"Sakura-chan and Syaoran-kun went off to explore the ruins."

Or...

Syaoran drew in breath sharply as he reached the top of the hill, and Sakura felt a little thrill herself though she had no interest in archaeology. The sheer size and beauty of the ruins were enough to entrance even her. Syaoran turned to her with a huge grin.

"Should we go in, Sakura?"

Sakura beamed enthusiastically. Here we go. In here, she would tell him, ask him... "Hai, Syaoran!"

"Sakura-chan and Syaoran-kun went off to explore their hearts."

Sonic glanced around. "Well, we could stay in the ruins, because they're safe from the laser, so we could spend more time there. Plus, there's another base here, so we could do two things at once. Sort of."

"Um, I don't know if that's the best idea, if I may say so, Sonic-san," Fay suggested meekly. "You see, Sakura-chan is looking to have a... private moment with Syaoran-kun, and I wouldn't want for us to intrude."

"The princess is gonna tell the kid she likes him?" Kurogane grunted, turning his head to Fay.

Fay grinned innocently. "Yes, actually, that was what Sakura-chan had in mind."

"And you like someone too, mage," Kurogane added darkly. Fay's smile faded in an instant. "But you're never gonna tell them, am I right?"

Fay laughed nervously and ran a hand through his long, blonde hair. "Oh, I don't know... maybe not."

"I guess that's none of my business," Kurogane said with a scowl. "But if you're going to involve yourself so heavily in someone else's life, mage, then I think they have a right to know!"

Fay shrugged dutifully. "Well... I guess you're right, Kuro-up. But that's just not my style."

For once, Mokona was silent.

"These ruins are incredible!"

Sakura had given up trying to keep up with Syaoran as he ran all over the ruins trying to find artifacts and clues to the past. She giggled at his constant excitement, but deep inside she was nervous. How would he take her confessions?

"Yeah, Syaoran-kun... I guess they really are."

[aperson]

"Well, we can wait a little while then." Said Amy. "Besides, I wanted to go for a walk with Sonic.

"Walk?" Sonic sounded confused.

"Yes, walking, you know, where you put one leg in front of the other?"

"Yeah, but... do I have to walk?"

"Just this once, for me?"

"I was only kidding, of course I'll walk. Anything for you."
Hearing this, Amy blushed a little bit.

"You're blushing Amy." Sonic teased.

How could you know that? I'm pink anyways!"

"I just know. Let's go, we don't have forever, just most of it. Tails, you're in charge."

"Got it." The fox replied.
Once the two hedgehogs were no longer in sight, Knuckles spoke up.
"You do realize that we will have to go to the ruins eventually anyways to escape the laser?"

"Of course," Kurogane spoke up in his deep voice. "But the mage and I wanna give the princess as much time as we can to confess to the kid. It would be really rude to just walk in on them now."

"Kurogane really cares about Sakura and Syaoran," Mokona said earnestly. "Does Kurogane care about Mokona and Fay, too?"

Kurogane snarled and snatched at his head, trying to get rid of the pest on top of it. "Definitely not you, pork bun!"

"But Fay?"

Kurogane glared and puffed out his chest. "I don't care about anyone, and certainly not the obnoxious mage."

A tiny smile flitted across Fay's lips, but this time it was real, not just an act to deflect incoming questions. Kurogane truly was a kind person, but was reluctant to let anyone show it, Fay's exact opposite. The more he appeared to be frustrated by you, the more he really cared.

"Syaoran-kun..." Sakura shook her head and laughed free-spiritedly at his energy and enthusiasm. "...you really love this stuff, don't you?"

"Of course," Syaoran replied instantly, turning from the wall to face her, the cloak she had once worn twirling around his body. "There's only one thing I care about more than this."

"Really?" Sakura's voice came out as a squeak. It wasn't another girl, was it?! "What?"

"My family is more important to me than archaeology."

"Huh?" Sakura was surprised by his response. Only then did she realize that she knew virtually nothing about Syaoran's family, his past, his world. It would lead to answering her second vital question, so she let the conversation flow in that direction. "What do you mean?"

"Well, I can't remember anything of my childhood. My father, Fujitaka, found me when I was small, and he took me in as his own child. But my father died a few years ago on an archaeological dig," Syaoran explained. The excavation of Clow's ruins was where he died... and we spent every moment together while he worked... "I took over after him, to carry out his dream after he was gone, but I was alone." Except for you! "He was all I had. So when I set out to find your feathers, for the first time I had a family again: you, Sakura, and Fay-san and Kurogane-san and Mokona. I care about you all so much." But you in particular, because you're my number one!

Sakura, speechless, flushed bright red. All she could think to say was, "I... care about all of you too. Thank you... for everything."

"For finding your feathers, Sakura?"

"Yes, and... for always being there for me, too."
